With any powerful and unprecedented declaration will come fear and opposition. In order to stay firm to see that declaration succeed, you must make that declaration BOLD.

BOLDNESS is not just charging ahead and being fearless, Bold in a UB SMART declaration is about having an emotional anchor. To find out if your declaration is bold, ask yourself:

  • What is the purpose of me making this declaration? Does it cost me emotionally?
  • What if I don’t get my declaration, will there be an emotional cost?

There are three components in an emotional anchor that must be present to hold you through the storms of uncertainty:

  1. Intensity
  2. Awareness
  3. Symbol

Your declaration has to be so intense that you “feel” it emotionally. For me, it’s the feeling I get when my basketball team is down by one point with 2.4 seconds left on the shot clock and they have only one play to run after passing the ball in. Who will they pass it to? Who will run the screen? Will the rest of my evening be celebrating with friends or alone in my sorrows? Dramatic, no! Intense, yes!

Intensity comes from being a part of something bigger than you–a movement! The intensity of your declaration comes from a team of people achieving the vision, not just doing it on your own. It is intense because you MUST count on others, talk with others, and inspire others to get what you’re passionate about.

Does everyone know the emotional pain you will have if the declaration isn’t fulfilled, like when your basketball team loses the playoffs? The more you share your passion for the declaration, the more accountable you are to the results, the more people will stand with you, check-in on you and finally celebrate with you!

When the reality of life changes on you (and it will)—the market drops, vendors can’t fulfill your orders, your star employee implode—will you turn to your emotional anchor? Is it in the forefront of your mind? I normally have a symbol I carry to remind me of my emotional anchor, my steadying reminder of the bigger picture. My symbol is a memento from the young leaders in Southeast Asia that we supported through leadership development programs.

Find that symbol for you—something that you can carry with you or is visible in your office that can hold you steady when the storms of life come crashing in.

The boldness we are looking for is one that will take you through the tension as you encounter resistance going towards your declaration or your vision. That boldness will also be that emotional anchor that will guide you and keep you grounded because now your declaration has a bigger purpose than just generating revenue. It has a greater purpose for you, your team, and the entire organization that will override the resistance of other competitors, market changing prices, and any unexpected changes or challenges that comes along the way.

Join me again next time as we talk about the last ingredient: the SMART acronym. Most of you already know about the SMART acronym (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely)—what I will talk about in the next blog is the WHY the SMART acronym, in the context of a UB SMART declaration, will get you the success you desire.

Until next time!
